API Survey Reveals Growing National Identity as Social Cohesion Index Climbs to 48.8%
The Africa Polling Institute’s 2026 Social Cohesion Survey finds Nigeria’s Social Cohesion Index at 48.8%, its highest score since the study began, and notes a rise in citizens identifying first as Nigerians rather than by ethnicity, region or religion. Despite this improvement, the report exposes a deep trust deficit: 72% of respondents distrust the presidency, 77% have little faith in the National Assembly, and 73% lack confidence in the judiciary. In contrast, religious and traditional leaders remain the most trusted institutions. The survey highlights strong patriotism and support for gender inclusion, with 71% willing to make personal sacrifices for the national good and up to 60% ready to vote women into high office. It also shows high backing for inter-ethnic and inter-faith marriages. API recommends establishing a National Social Cohesion Commission or creating Social Cohesion Desks across government to build on these gains. The findings were unveiled at the National Social Cohesion Dialogue in Abuja, where religious and traditional leaders emphasised dialogue, forgiveness and unity.
