FCT Teachers Suspend Strike as Wike Approves ₦5bn Monthly Intervention

FCT Teachers Suspend Strike as Wike Approves ₦5bn Monthly Intervention

The Federal Capital Territory branch of the Nigeria Union of Teachers has called off its strike following an emergency meeting of its State Wing Executive Council. At a news conference in Gwagwalada, SWEC Chairman Abdullahi Shafa said FCT Minister Nyesom Wike approved a ₦5 billion monthly package. This includes ₦2 billion from FCT Internally Generated Revenue and ₦3 billion from area councils to fund a 40% peculiar allowance and clear teachers’ outstanding entitlements. Shafa added that the minister will engage the Civil Service Commission to remove promotion hurdles and review the 2024 exercise. All primary and secondary school teachers are to resume duties on Monday, April 27, with assurances against victimisation. The union will revisit its position if the government fails to honour the agreement.

Do you think this ₦5bn monthly intervention will really address teachers' long-standing demands in the FCT?

I get the optimism here, but a regular payment might not tackle deeper issues like resource gaps or career development.

It's interesting how quickly the strike ended once the intervention was announced, even without details on payment timelines.

I wonder if this intervention is more of a political move than a genuine commitment to improving education quality.

Unions and administrators should set up clear tracking of each allocated naira to school resources to build trust and prevent future walkouts.
