AERE to Tinubu: Economic Gains Must Translate to Lower Prices and Better Living Standards
The Alliance for Economic Research and Ethics has urged President Bola Tinubu and the Nigeria Revenue Service to ensure that improved revenue figures and macroeconomic indicators translate into lower food prices, better wages and meaningful poverty reduction. The group said tax collections rose from ₦12.3 trillion in 2023 to ₦27.1 trillion by July 2026. It also cited stronger external reserves, GDP growth and debt-to-GDP figures. However, it argued that these gains have not improved life enough for ordinary households. AERE pointed to 15.91% headline inflation, 17.52% food inflation and an estimated 140 million Nigerians living below the poverty line. It said the ₦70,000 minimum wage remains far below the cost of basic living, especially for workers in the large informal sector. The group also raised concerns about rising public debt, multiple taxes on businesses and shortcomings in fiscal transparency. It urged the government to move from macroeconomic stability to policies that deliver visible relief for households.
