Oyo Cassava Farmers Double Yields Through Practical Training and Mechanisation
For years, cassava farmers in Oyo State struggled with low yields of just 7 to 12 tonnes per hectare. Their hard work often brought only modest incomes. Today, a targeted training programme led by the African Agricultural Technology Foundation and partners is transforming production. The initiative teaches Good Agronomic Practices and offers mechanisation services. It runs in seven local government areas during the slack season, training over 4,650 farmers so far. Farmers have doubled their output to 20–25 t/ha. They now use improved varieties, proper spacing and tractors. A linked processing facility provides assured markets for high-quality cassava flour. Many participants, especially women, are exploring new income streams, turning farming into a viable business.
