Lost Tomb of Ancient Official Paser Unearthed at Luxor

Lost Tomb of Ancient Official Paser Unearthed at Luxor

Archaeologists from Leiden University have uncovered a 3,000-year-old tomb at Sheikh Abd el-Qurna on Luxor’s West Bank. The burial site dates to Egypt’s Ramesside period and belonged to an official named Paser. The tomb follows a classic New Kingdom design with an open courtyard, a rock-cut chapel shaped like an inverted “T” and underground burial chambers. Inscriptions depict Paser worshipping deities and scenes of him beside his wife before an offering table. A mudbrick bench and a staircase flanked by ramps remain well preserved in the courtyard. Further study will seek to confirm the identities of those buried inside and assess the tomb’s wider historical importance.

It's hard to tell if this tomb's courtyard adds any fresh architectural insight compared to well-documented New Kingdom examples.

Museums and educators should use Paser's tomb findings to spark engaging lessons about ancient Egyptian society and daily governance structures.
