One-Year-Old Fatally Shot by Police Responding to Alleged Shoplifting
A one-year-old boy in Mississippi was shot and killed when a police officer opened fire on the vehicle carrying him, his mother and his aunt. Officers from the Senatobia Police Department say they responded to an alleged Walmart shoplifting and encountered the women and child fleeing into their car. According to the department’s statement, officers tried to stop the vehicle after it moved “in the direction of officers,” nearly striking one of them. An officer then discharged their weapon and the vehicle drove to a hospital, where the child was pronounced dead and another passenger was critically injured. Witnesses claim police were lying in wait in the parking lot before the women drove off. The boy’s great-grandmother condemned the department’s record, saying local residents often hear about similar incidents in the news.
