From Covenant to Toll Gate: Exposing the Fraud in Modern Nigerian Wedding Traditions
Traditional Nigerian marriages were once mutual covenants built on three core guarantees: virginity and lineage certainty, family-led protection, and character training. Each side had clear obligations and remedies if those guarantees failed. Today, most families have quietly abandoned these promises yet still demand onerous bride-price lists, prostration ceremonies, and expensive trousseaux. What remains is a commercial toll gate masquerading as sacred custom. Nigerian statutes and the Constitution do not require bride price, introduction lists, or forced prostration. Forcing these demands can breach criminal and human-rights laws. This post asks a simple question: if the original guarantees are gone, can families still claim to practice true tradition, or is it outright fraud?
