Judge Orders Lil Nas X into Mental Health Diversion Program After LA Arrest

Judge Orders Lil Nas X into Mental Health Diversion Program After LA Arrest

A California judge granted Grammy winner Montero Lamar Hill entry into a mental health diversion program following his August arrest in Los Angeles. He faces charges of attacking police officers and resisting arrest after wandering nearly naked on Ventura Boulevard wearing only underpants and cowboy boots. Authorities also took him to hospital over overdose concerns. At a hearing on April 6, the judge said the charges could be quashed if Hill completes the two-year treatment and obeys all laws. Hill, diagnosed with bipolar disorder after the incident, said he was “thankful” and that things “could have been much worse.” Hill’s defence notes he spent two months in an Arizona treatment facility. His father also shared that caring for his mother’s addiction put extra pressure on the 26-year-old artist.

It's interesting the judge opted for mental health diversion instead of traditional sentencing, especially given the alleged assault on police officers.

This feels like preferential treatment, as most people charged with similar offenses would likely face jail time instead of a health program.

Regardless of status, ensuring proper mental health support after such incidents can reduce repeat offenses and ease pressure on the justice system.
