Ogun SWAN Calls for Sports Masterplan and MKO Arena Rehabilitation to Boost Grassroots Talent
The Chairman of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria in Ogun State, Michael-Azeez Ogunsiji, has urged the state government to adopt a comprehensive sports masterplan for sustainable development and talent discovery. He stressed that investments in infrastructure must be matched with regular maintenance and long-term athlete programmes. Ogunsiji highlighted the poor condition of the MKO Abiola Sports Arena, pointing out the abandoned swimming pool and absence of a practice pitch. He appealed for urgent rehabilitation and the revival of commercial activities within the complex to enhance security and generate revenue. He lamented that gains from the 2025 National Sports Festival have not translated into lasting grassroots initiatives. He called on the state Football Association, academies, clubs and corporate partners to strengthen talent identification and support sports journalism. At the association’s delegates’ congress, national SWAN leaders praised the new secretariat provided to the Ogun chapter. They also urged capacity building in digital journalism and emerging media technologies to improve professional sports reporting.
