Pastor Jerry Eze’s Marriage Testimony: “Marriage Is an Assignment”
Pastor Jerry Eze once shared that the early stage of his marriage was extremely difficult. He said he felt intimidated by his wife’s anger and, on more than one occasion, packed his things and left after arguments. He recalled eventually praying to leave the marriage, but said he came to see it differently: not simply as a destination for personal happiness, but as an assignment that required him to work on himself too. He said this meant learning patience, love, better communication and restraint rather than focusing only on changing his wife. His testimony raises an important question for couples: when conflict comes, are we only waiting for our spouses to change, or are we also willing to examine our own behaviour? At the same time, patience and forgiveness should never be used to excuse abuse or destructive conduct. Both partners have a responsibility to make a marriage safe, respectful and healthy.
