Governor Aiyedatiwa Clears N2.4bn Arrears to Honour Ondo Pensioners

Retired civil servants in Ondo State endured long waits for pension and gratuity payments. Many faced financial hardship and health challenges without their lawful entitlements. Some even passed away before receiving what they had earned. Governor Aiyedatiwa’s recent disbursement of N2.466 billion to 733 retirees from the 2018 and 2019 batches marks a moral intervention. Since taking office, his administration has cleared multiple arrear backlogs and maintained steady monthly releases to honour retirees. The state’s pension union has publicly praised this consistent approach. It shows that retirement can be a period of honour and peace after years of service. The phased payouts send a clear message: the sacrifices of public servants will not be forgotten. Comrade Olufemi Lawson, Senior Special Assistant on Public Enlightenment to the Ondo State Governor, highlights this as a significant step in restoring dignity for pensioners.

Perhaps it's hasty to assume sheer delay—budget allocations and bureaucratic steps might explain the timing.

It's surprising that it took an entire administration's term for fully legal pension obligations to be met.

Clearing arrears is good, but don't forget past hardships many pensioners endured waiting for what they had rightfully earned.

The state should establish a transparent pension tracking system so retirees can verify payment status and avoid future delays.
