How Are Over 10,000 Former Boko Haram Fighters Deemed ‘Repentant’?
Premium Times recently reported that more than 10,000 captured Boko Haram fighters have been released back into communities across northern Nigeria. This move has raised serious concerns about public safety and accountability. What criteria did the government use to declare these fighters genuinely repentant? Was there any clear evidence of remorse or consistent good behaviour before they were freed? Did the released suspects formally plead for mercy, or were they simply granted release without due process? Why have they not faced trial in a competent court of law? Should special tribunals be established to speed up these trials and ensure justice? The current approach appears insufficient and may put innocent lives at risk.
