The Landlord: How a Used Camry Sparked Our Wild Road Trips
In 2019 my friend Rotimi bought a 2006 Toyota Camry with a cracked leather seat. We nicknamed it the Landlord because it acted like it owned every road it touched. That car changed our lives in ways none of us expected. One Friday at 7pm, Rotimi pulled up outside my flat and said, “Get in.” Without questions, we drove to Ibadan in two hours. We ate suya wrapped in newspaper near Dugbe and argued about football, money, and who was the most likely to succeed. Rotimi reminded us we had no excuse to keep waiting for “someday.” After that first trip, we chased bole and fish in Port Harcourt, hunted the best ofe onugbu in Benin City, and explored a hidden beach in Badagry. The Landlord broke down seven times, but each roadside fix became another memory. We stood by the road with cold drinks, laughed, and called that car “resting.” Last month Rotimi sold the Landlord. We watched her drive away like an old friend. He said we did good with that car. Now he’s eyeing something bigger, and I can’t wait for our next adventure.
