Croatia’s Igor Matanovic Furious as VAR Rules Out Stoppage-Time Equaliser

Croatia’s Igor Matanovic Furious as VAR Rules Out Stoppage-Time Equaliser — 1 of 3
1 / 3

Croatia seemed to have snatched a stoppage-time equaliser against Portugal, only for VAR to intervene and rule striker Igor Matanovic offside. Matanovic admitted he wasn’t even certain he touched the ball. He recalled the referee saying a chip in the ball detected slight contact, so the goal could not stand. The forward rued his team’s luck after seeing a post, a penalty appeal turned down and multiple efforts ruled out. The 2-1 loss ends Croatia’s World Cup run. Portugal move on to face Spain in the round of 16, while Croatia now turn their focus to the UEFA Nations League this September.

How do you feel about VAR overturning that stoppage-time goal despite the referee noticing only slight contact on the ball?

It's odd how VAR can spot a minimal touch yet still wipe out a dramatic last-minute equaliser so precisely.

I get VAR's intent, but shouldn't players and fans accept these marginal calls rather than blaming technology every time?

Teams should adapt faster to VAR standards in training so strikers avoid getting caught offside on negligible deflections.
