Ebonyi CSOs Threaten Lawsuit Over Alleged EEDC Overbilling

Ebonyi CSOs Threaten Lawsuit Over Alleged EEDC Overbilling

A coalition of civil society groups in Ebonyi has announced plans to sue the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company over alleged illegal billing and exploitative practices. Leaders say customers have endured years of overbilling, arbitrary disconnections and unlawful arrears on prepayment meters. Petitions to EEDC’s regional office, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission and the state Ministry of Justice failed to resolve the issues. The group will seek judicial redress and has called on NERC to launch an independent inquiry. They also urged the Ebonyi State House of Assembly and the governor to intervene and secure compensation for affected consumers. In response, EEDC’s communications head stated the company follows NERC-approved billing methods, has conducted extensive bill reconciliations worth millions of naira and asks customers to submit formal complaints through its service channels.

It seems surprising that EEDC practices could go unchecked for years despite regular customer complaints about arbitrary billing and shutoffs.

I wonder if regulators ever looked into those billing issues before now, or did CSOs miss some steps?

I'm not convinced lawsuit threats alone will shift EEDC's approach when joint dialogue and regulatory oversight might pressure them quicker.

Residents should document disputed bills with meter readings and petition both the consumer protection agency and public utilities commission promptly.
