Avante Review: Strategic Revenge and Strong Performances Marred by Flaws

Avante Review: Strategic Revenge and Strong Performances Marred by Flaws

Avante is a Nollywood thriller directed by Toka McBraror. It stars Chimezie Imo as Gaju, who takes on a false identity to avenge his parents’ murder. Romance and moral conflict arise when he falls for his target’s daughter. We expected an intense conflict film after the opening scene of a blood-soaked city. Instead, the story unfolds almost entirely within a single estate. Unnecessary subplots and continuity errors—like inconsistent vehicle plates and awkward dialogue shifts—distract from the main revenge plot. On the plus side, the lush compound setting and rich color grading create an inviting atmosphere. Chimezie Imo delivers a compelling performance as Albert, and the actor playing Sir Bruno brings brooding intensity. Even the AI-generated battle and train scenes, while superfluous, show technical ambition. Avante is worth watching for its pacing and lead performances, but it won’t linger in your memory. Final Score: 5.6/10.
