Carl Ikeme: Nigeria Should Never Miss Consecutive World Cups
Former Super Eagles goalkeeper Carl Ikeme says Nigeria should never miss the FIFA World Cup, following the team’s failure to qualify for both the 2022 and 2026 tournaments. Ikeme, who earned 10 caps before acute leukaemia forced his early retirement in 2017, said missing a World Cup remains one of his greatest regrets as a player. He believes Nigeria has enough talented players to be Africa’s best side. However, he said the environment around the national team must improve for players to perform at their highest level. Nigeria’s back-to-back World Cup absences have renewed calls for reforms in football administration.
