Naomi Osaka’s Show-Stopping Wimbledon Debut in a White Kimono Gown Inspired by Kill Bill

Naomi Osaka’s Show-Stopping Wimbledon Debut in a White Kimono Gown Inspired by Kill Bill — 1 of 8
1 / 8

Naomi Osaka broke Wimbledon’s all-white dress code with a custom, floor-length kimono gown titled “Evolving Ceremony.” Designed by Tokyo-based Hana Yagi, the garment features seven upcycled textiles from vintage Japanese kimonos and a traditional shiromuku bridal dress. A structured obi belt cinches the waist, while elongated square sleeves and a layered tulle skirt create a dramatic silhouette. The hand-embroidered robe depicts cranes and cherry blossoms, and Osaka completed the look with diamond and pearl jewelry from Mikimoto and a kanzashi floral hair ornament. Inspired by Lucy Liu’s O-Ren Ishii character in Kill Bill, the nine detachable layers allowed Osaka to switch into a custom white Nike performance dress in under sixty seconds. She followed her opening win with the obi belt styled over a Nike bomber jacket for round two.

What do you think inspired Osaka to choose a traditional kimono silhouette over a typical tennis dress?

Absolutely! That kimono twist feels like a bold tribute to her roots and a style power move.

Combining seven upcycled kimono textiles with a traditional shiromuku bridal dress sounds bold, but it might clash with Wimbledon's minimalist dress code.

I no dey convinced say this floor-length white kimono gown truly fits the sporty Wimbledon spirit or if it's all style over function.

To maintain mobility and respect Wimbledon rules, athletes could adapt traditional elements in lighter fabrics suited for intense matches.
