Messi and Argentine FA Hit with $7M Fraud Lawsuit Over Miami Friendlies

Messi and Argentine FA Hit with $7M Fraud Lawsuit Over Miami Friendlies

A Miami event promoter has filed a fraud and breach of contract suit against Lionel Messi and the Argentine Football Association. VID claims it paid $7 million for exclusive rights to two October friendlies in Miami and Puerto Rico, where Messi was contractually obliged to play at least 30 minutes in each match. Messi sat out both games, opting to watch from the stands to stay fit for an Inter Miami MLS fixture. VID says the Puerto Rico match was moved due to low ticket sales, costing over $1 million, and alleges the FA’s promised makeup match in China for 2026 never happened. The case follows a recent class action over Messi’s absence from a May MLS international exhibition.

You're right, this suit could disrupt his off-season plans and force him to deal with legal stress before any new club move.

I'm not convinced this lawsuit will derail his career; Messi's track record shows he handles bigger challenges.

It's surprising how such big names can end up in breach of contract disputes over friendly matches.

Honestly, promoters should verify all contract clauses before handing over millions for just two exhibition games.

A simple lesson here: always include clear performance guarantees and penalty terms in any high-value sports contract.
