Honouring Parents: Choosing Forgiveness and Healing

Honouring parents is not a reward for perfect parenting. It is an act of obedience to God. Ephesians 6:1–3 teaches children to honour their father and mother, with a promise attached to that instruction. For people raised with rejection, neglect or abandonment, this can be difficult. Honour does not mean denying abuse, excusing wrongdoing or placing yourself in an unsafe situation. It means refusing to let bitterness and unforgiveness control your heart, while seeking wisdom about reconciliation where it is safe and possible. Forgiveness and humility can create room for healing. If an unresolved offence has separated you from a parent, ask God for grace and wisdom to take the right step. Choose peace, set healthy boundaries where needed, and honour God through your response. Reflect: Is there bitterness I need to surrender to God? What practical and safe step can I take toward healing or reconciliation?

Obedience is important, but discussions of honour should leave room for boundaries and honest healing after neglect.

It may help to separate forgiveness from pretending nothing happened, then seek healing step by step through prayer and reflection.
