After Ogbomoso Abductions: Can the Aare Ona Kakanfo Secure the South-West?
The abduction of pupils, teachers and residents from schools in Ogbomoso on May 15 has shocked Nigeria. Disturbing videos of beheading and torture deepen the trauma and fear across communities. Every security and intelligence resource must be deployed urgently to rescue these victims. Years ago, the Aare Ona Kakanfo wrote to South-West governors proposing stronger regional collaboration against rising terrorist networks. Retired General Kunle Togun also warned of foreign camps infiltrating our forests. Yet those warnings were largely ignored, leaving local security outfits underfunded, poorly equipped and politicised. It is time for governors to move beyond symbolic gestures. Intelligence sharing, professional recruitment and partnerships with community vigilantes must be prioritised. Above all, the rescued abductees deserve swift action. The South-West’s future depends on transparent, coordinated security measures now.
