Dead to Sin, Alive to God: Understanding the Transfer of Dominion in Romans 6
Many readers of Romans 6 assume it simply calls us to avoid sinful acts. But Paul goes deeper. He portrays sin as a reigning power over our body, a ruler that once governed our appetites, passions, and impulses. Through union with Christ, believers have already died to this old government. We are not being asked to become dead to sin; we are called to recognize the reality of our death with Christ and refuse to yield our members as instruments of unrighteousness. Instead, we present every faculty of our being to God, living from the life and grace already given. In this transfer of dominion, sin loses its claim and Christ reigns supreme in the believer.
