1 / 4

The Sir Emeka Okwuosa Foundation welcomed a delegation of VOOM Foundation volunteers from the United States, Canada and Rwanda at Dame Irene Okwuosa Memorial Hospital in Orifite, Anambra. Among the group were returning volunteers on their seventh mission and first-timers eager to make an impact. In total, 31 pediatric non-medical volunteers joined skilled nurses, anesthesiologists, perfusionists and doctors for this health outreach. The gathering delivered emotional and inspiring moments as the foundation and its guests prepared for a series of medical and community activities ahead.

Are you curious if it's the hospital atmosphere or the foundation's support that keeps volunteers returning?

Maybe it's not pure altruism. Some volunteers seek CV boost or personal connections more than real impact.

It's great to see international support, but I wonder if local healthcare staff have enough resources once volunteers leave.

I'm not convinced that bringing in foreign volunteers solves long-term issues better than investing in local training first.

Partnering with nearby universities for ongoing skills workshops could complement these volunteer missions and build local capacity sustainably.
