Asaba Plans 45-Foot Memorial for Victims of the 1967 Massacre
Plans are underway in Asaba, Delta State, to build a major memorial for victims of the October 1967 Asaba Massacre. The proposed 45-foot monument is being developed as part of efforts by the Asagba of Asaba to preserve the community’s history and honour those who died. Artist and sculptor Enyi Echezona Jr. has presented a design for the project. The monument is expected to include a lighthouse, a mini gallery, a mini museum and a display of victims’ names. It will complement the existing memorial artwork at Ogbeosowe and provide a place for residents, visitors and researchers to learn about the tragedy. The project also recognises the resilience of Asaba survivors, especially women who became family breadwinners after losing their husbands during the massacre.
