Journalist Stanley Ugagbe Held Blindfolded for 48 Hours in Abuja Over CBN Deputy Governor Report
On July 1, investigative reporter Stanley Ugagbe was intercepted by masked security operatives in Karu, Abuja, as he returned from a training session. He was handcuffed, blindfolded and driven to an undisclosed location after his laptop and phone were seized from his home in Jikwoyi. Authorities later confirmed he was held at the National Cybercrime Centre in Abuja. Sources say the detention followed two petitions: one by Emem Usoro, Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, accusing him of publishing false information, and another anonymous complaint alleging a leak of sensitive government data. Ugagbe has maintained that all source materials and equipment belong to his news organisation. He was released after approximately 48 hours in custody. The Nigeria Police Force has not issued any public statement on the incident.
