Why Nigeria Needs an Emergency Intervention Fund for the Police
I begin by thanking President Tinubu for appointing Tunji Disu as Acting Inspector General of Police. I urge the creation of an Emergency Intervention Fund (EIF) to overhaul the Nigeria Police Force. Chronic underfunding since 1983 has left the force without enough vehicles, helicopters, or modern equipment. Officers’ welfare remains deplorable, with dilapidated barracks, meager pay, and inadequate pensions. The letter reviews past reforms under President Shagari, highlights gaps in training, recruitment, and data management, and calls for direct, statutory funding backed by Acts of Parliament. Citing remarks from the Chief of Defense Staff and the President’s own speeches on modernizing the police, I stress that immediate action is needed to boost operational capacity, restore public trust, and safeguard lives.
