Femi Fani-Kayode Confirms Ambassadorial Posting to South Africa After Swap

Femi Fani-Kayode Confirms Ambassadorial Posting to South Africa After Swap

I am pleased to announce that the President has approved my appointment as Nigeria’s Ambassador-Designate to South Africa. I requested a redeployment from Germany for personal reasons and a stronger pan-African alignment. The Foreign Affairs Minister, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu kindly accommodated my request. I am grateful to Senator Sam Enang for agreeing to a straight swap of postings. Contrary to some reports, Germany never formally rejected me. A recent magazine article claiming otherwise was a malicious fabrication. We have petitioned the relevant security agencies and instructed our lawyers to pursue defamation proceedings against those responsible. I look forward to serving in South Africa, a nation I admire for its shared convictions, strong economy, and close ties with Nigeria. I thank everyone who has expressed concern and support during this process, and I remain committed to advancing our pan-African vision.

How might his redeployment from Germany to South Africa impact Nigeria's pan-African goals?

You raise a fair point, but I wonder if one ambassadorial move really shifts our pan-African strategy in any meaningful way.

Honestly, one ambassador swap won't make or break pan-African ambitions; it's about consistent strategy and partnerships across the continent.

Which pan-African projects do you feel could shift focus now that he's in South Africa instead of Germany?

It's interesting that a personal reasons claim can override lengthy service in Germany for a more symbolic pan-African posting.

Redeploying someone with European diplomatic experience feels like a downgrade rather than progress for Nigeria's foreign relations.

To ensure a smooth transition, the ministry should brief him on South African policy priorities and engage local staff early.
