Ghana Postpones Evacuation Flight from South Africa; Only One Citizen Shows Up
Ghana has delayed the evacuation of over 800 of its citizens from South Africa after a viral video of Emmanuel Asamoah’s alleged assault sparked widespread outrage. The foreign ministry said the move was necessary to secure legal clearances, mandatory passenger screenings and flight permits from South African authorities. As a result, the planned Thursday departure from O.R. Tambo International Airport was pushed back by a few days. AFP journalists at the airport noted that only one Ghanaian arrived to board the delayed flight. Accra has promised returnees financial reintegration packages and psychosocial support. The latest wave of xenophobic attacks in South Africa has reignited debates across Africa about migration, pan-African unity and the enforcement of free-movement frameworks under the African Continental Free Trade Area.
