Why Nafiu Bala Gombe’s Claim to ADC Leadership May Fail
The ADC constitution bars party officers from holding office while contesting elections. Nafiu Bala Gombe remained National Deputy Chairman (North) even after running for governor in 2023, in violation of Article 17.3. His election or appointment to that deputy position was never formalized. There are no records of a proper vote or valid appointment by the party’s Executive Committee. Ralph Nwosu also overstayed as National Chairman beyond the eight-year limit. His resignation in 2026 created a vacancy that the constitution says must be filled by committee appointment from the same zone, not self-appointment. Under Article 17.4, an interim chair must be named by the Executive Committee, not assumed unilaterally. Given these breaches, the courts are unlikely to back Nafiu Bala’s claim and will defer to party rules as reinforced by the 2025 Supreme Court ruling.
