Okpe Union Appoints New Board of Trustees in Landmark Inauguration

Okpe Union Appoints New Board of Trustees in Landmark Inauguration

The Okpe Union held a historic inauguration on Sunday at its national headquarters in Lagos, appointing a new Board of Trustees as authorized by recent Federal High Court rulings. President General Prof Igho Natufe welcomed members and highlighted the union’s legacy as Nigeria’s oldest registered ethnic association. The Federal High Courts in Abuja and Lagos affirmed the legitimate leadership’s authority to fill the governance gap. Dr (Mrs) Rose Atarhe-Abuh was sworn in as Chairperson, Barrister Felix Orere as Secretary, and eight other trustees joined the board. Prof Natufe praised Okpe nationals at home and abroad for their strategic advice and financial contributions. He emphasized the union’s role in promoting good governance, the rule of law, and a restructured federalism that respects every ethnic nationality. In her acceptance speech, Dr Atarhe-Abuh pledged to serve with integrity, diligence, and fairness. She called on all members to remain actively engaged and work together to strengthen the union’s structures and preserve its heritage.

I wonder how this new board will shape the union's legacy after that court ruling. What changes should members expect?

It's interesting they highlight a historic inauguration but offer few details on trustee backgrounds or qualifications. Feels a bit vague.

I'm not convinced the board's authority is secure yet, even with court backing. Past leadership shifts didn't always stick around.

Members should request a clear roadmap from the new trustees, outlining upcoming projects and timelines to ensure accountability from the start.
