How Can Nigerian SMEs Structure Strong Business Partnerships?
Corporate partnerships and joint ventures remain uncommon among many Nigerian small-business owners, even though they have helped large professional firms and corporations grow. The ongoing consolidation in the insurance sector also shows how mergers, acquisitions and partnerships can strengthen businesses. I am planning a study-abroad consultancy focused on one destination. I have visited the country twice, held preliminary discussions and secured an agency role with a university. Rather than build alone, I am considering partners who can contribute capital, operations, marketing or other valuable expertise. I need practical advice on finding trustworthy partners, negotiating equity, choosing between a joint venture and a revenue-sharing arrangement, and raising seed capital without surrendering too much ownership. What company structure works best for a small Nigerian business that may later bring in multiple owners or investors? I would especially value lessons from people who have built businesses through partnerships, joint ventures or equity investment in Nigeria.
