June 12 Democracy Day: Pride, Pitfalls and the Path Forward
Nigeria has enjoyed continuous civilian rule since 1999. We honour the resilience of citizens, journalists, labour unions and activists who ended military dictatorship and defended democratic freedoms. Yet democracy is more than elections or symbolic ceremonies. Many Nigerians still face poverty, insecurity, corruption and exclusion. Rights violations and weak accountability have undermined public trust in our institutions. The true significance of June 12 lies in its ideals: popular consent, electoral integrity, rule of law, human rights and inclusion. This day should prompt honest reflection on whether we are moving closer to those goals. To truly honour the heroes of June 12, we must build institutions that protect citizens, ensure every vote counts and hold leaders accountable. Until democracy delivers justice, security and opportunity for all, the promise remains unfulfilled.
