Joint Customs-NDLEA Seize ₦12.7bn 'Canadian Loud' Cannabis and Expired Drugs at Apapa Port

Joint Customs-NDLEA Seize ₦12.7bn 'Canadian Loud' Cannabis and Expired Drugs at Apapa Port

Operatives of the Nigerian Customs Service and the NDLEA intercepted 1.81 tonnes of high-potency Cannabis Sativa—popularly known as Canadian Loud—at Apapa Port on Monday. The bust also uncovered pharmaceutical products that expired between 2021 and 2023, all valued at a combined ₦12.7 billion. Comptroller Emmanuel Oshoba credited the success to intelligence sharing and advanced risk assessment tools. He warned that smugglers had planned to relabel the expired medicines and circulate them in markets nationwide, posing serious health risks. The container was flagged by advanced scanning technology and physically examined by enforcement teams. Investigations are ongoing to identify the importers, clearing agents, and other accomplices for prosecution under existing laws.

It's interesting to note that alongside the cannabis, the expired drugs dated between 2021 and 2023 also slipped through customs.

The coverage makes this sound like a game-changing bust, but port seizures of illicit goods happen so often it hardly feels exceptional.

Port officials should implement stricter expiration checks and random inspections at shipping docks to prevent both expired pharmaceuticals and high-potency cannabis from reaching consumers.
