Isoko Traditional Rulers Split Over N250 Million Chieftaincy Offer

A Delta South senatorial hopeful has offered N250 million to Isoko traditional rulers for an omnibus chieftaincy title. Some rulers call it a “Greek gift” and have rejected the proposal. Others are lobbying hard to share in the bounty. One anonymous king argued that such honours should be based on performance, not cash payments. Isoko comprises 17 autonomous clans, each empowered to confer titles. Last weekend, Senator Joel Onowakpo Thomas secured an endorsement for a 2027 second term from a gathering of rulers, politicians and the local development union – a move that has sparked widespread criticism.
