HEDA Alerts Nigerians to Escalating Flood Risks

HEDA Alerts Nigerians to Escalating Flood Risks

The Human and Environmental Development Agenda has warned of rising flood threats across Nigeria after a recent alert from the national hydrological agency. Officials say the forecasts have been over 80 percent accurate in recent years. They attribute the floods to climate change, intensified rainfall and human factors such as blocked drains and poor waste management. Overflowing rivers and weak urban drainage systems have triggered flash floods and widespread inundation in cities. The director also pointed to destroyed wetlands, deforestation and silted dams as key contributors. He called on both government and citizens to desilt channels, protect natural water buffers and adopt better waste practices to curb future flooding.
