Edo State Partners with Neuropsychiatric Hospital to Enhance Mental Health Rehabilitation
Edo State is in talks with the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Uselu, Benin, to improve treatment and rehabilitation for mentally ill individuals rescued from the streets. The move aims to provide professional care for vulnerable residents, including deportee Peter Guobadia, who was found in mental distress along Airport Road. The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development explained that formal collaboration is under discussion and that support from NGOs, development partners, and local stakeholders will be critical. Existing facilities are overstretched, highlighting the need for sustained interventions to remove individuals from public spaces and offer long-term care. Guobadia’s case illustrates the challenges faced by returnees who lose contact with family. After protective custody, he underwent medical evaluation and rehabilitation before efforts to trace his relatives and facilitate reintegration. Hospital officials confirmed their readiness to collaborate on clinical assessments, staff training, and community mental health support across Edo State.
