On Democracy Day, Speaker Abbas Pays N17.5m to Free 21 Zaria Inmates
The Speaker of the House of Representatives visited the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Zaria on Democracy Day to oversee the release of 21 inmates. He settled N17.506 million in fines that had kept them behind bars for minor offences. Most of the beneficiaries were jailed for small fines they could not pay, some less than N100,000. The Speaker expressed concern that inmates endure extended detention over such sums and vowed to present his findings to the National Assembly for budgetary support. During the visit, he praised the facility’s management and noted improvements in cleanliness, staff morale, and inmate welfare. He identified the clinic, school, and vocational training centre as priority areas for rehabilitation. He also donated 21 motorcycles to custodial personnel and distributed 1,000 motorcycles to teachers in Zaria Federal Constituency to ease transportation challenges.
