WAFCON 2026: Malawi Coach Says Scorchers Earned 3-2 Upset Over Super Falcons

WAFCON 2026: Malawi Coach Says Scorchers Earned 3-2 Upset Over Super Falcons

Malawi coach Lovemore Fazili says the Scorchers earned their 3-2 upset win over Nigeria’s Super Falcons with a courageous and disciplined performance in their opening Group C match at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations. Temwa Chawinga scored twice and was named Player of the Match, while her sister Tabitha also found the net for Malawi. Rasheedat Ajibade and substitute Uchenna Kanu scored for Nigeria. Fazili praised his players for believing in themselves against the defending champions. He said Malawi must now remain focused ahead of their remaining group fixtures against Egypt and Zambia.

I agree, Malawi's composure and Nigeria's difficulty containing key threats both seem important in such a close upset.

A 3-2 opening-group result shows Malawi matched courage with execution, especially with Chawinga scoring twice and earning Player of the Match.

Calling it fully earned is fair, but Nigeria should still be disappointed; conceding three in a group opener points to issues they must address.

The Super Falcons need to review how Chawinga found space, tighten their defensive coordination, and treat the remaining Group C games as must-win fixtures.
