Cooking Gas Prices Surge as Middle East Tensions and Forex Volatility Bite
Experts warn that global energy costs, naira volatility and domestic supply challenges are driving cooking gas prices up across Nigeria. In Abuja, LPG now sells between ₦1,350 and ₦1,500 per kg, with refill costs of ₦6,750–₦7,500 for a 5kg cylinder and ₦16,875–₦18,750 for a 12.5kg cylinder. Traders in some areas charge as much as ₦1,600 per kg. An economist explains that the U.S.–Iran conflict has pushed up Brent crude and international LPG benchmarks. A weaker naira further raises landing costs for imported gas, despite a recent report showing 100% domestic LPG supply in April. Residents and small business owners say rising costs are forcing them back to kerosene, charcoal or firewood. They urge the government to stabilise prices and improve storage and distribution infrastructure.
