Journalist Stanley Ugagbe Freed After Press Institute Intervention

Journalist Stanley Ugagbe Freed After Press Institute Intervention

Journalist Stanley Ugagbe has been released from police custody following intervention by the International Press Institute’s Nigeria committee. He was handed over to the institute’s president at around 7:30 p.m. Ugagbe, a reporter with the online platform Secret Reporters, was arrested at his Abuja home last Wednesday. Although he has been granted bail, investigations into alleged espionage, cyberstalking and other computer offences continue. The press institute engaged directly with police authorities. After intensive negotiations, they secured his release and expressed appreciation for the cooperation. The institute says it will keep monitoring the case to safeguard press freedom and protect media professionals from intimidation.

I'm not convinced that a single intervention changes the bigger issues with press freedom in Nigeria.

News outlets should document such interventions carefully and share best practices to protect reporters in future cases.
