When Graduation Gowns Become Fashion Shows: A Call for Parental Guidance

When Graduation Gowns Become Fashion Shows: A Call for Parental Guidance

I recently saw photos of secondary school students in graduation gowns posing like fashion models. Heavy makeup, skimpy outfits and camera angles belong to adult pages, not school albums. Graduation should celebrate growth, discipline and learning. When a 14-year-old is sexualized for likes, we confuse achievement with exposure and teach them to chase validation. Without adult guidance, smartphones and social media will shape our children’s values. The camera doesn’t know the difference between confidence and exposure. Only parenting does. So as parents and guardians: ask “why” before you say “yes”. Set standards early and teach that modesty is wisdom. Monitor their phones and celebrate character over aesthetics.

How should parents talk to teenagers about dignified graduation photos instead of turning the ceremony into a mini fashion runway?

I agree, graduations celebrate achievement. Parents fit set guidelines on outfits and remind teens why photos matter.

These poses and heavy makeup seem more suited for adult events, not a school graduation celebrating discipline and achievement.

Not every student pose implies sexual intent; some might just be enjoying self-expression without any adult undertones.

Parents can set simple guidelines before photo day, focusing on modest attire and natural smiles to honor the ceremony's purpose.
