DHQ: US ‘New’ Operation Details Are Declassified May 2026 Joint Mission

The Defence Headquarters has clarified that the United States’ recent announcement of a counter-terrorism operation killing 199 jihadists was not a new offensive. It was simply the declassification of details from a joint Nigeria-US mission conducted in May 2026. Major General Samaila Uba, the Director of Defence Information, reminded Nigerians that the military had already reported the operation at the time. He said the fresh US statements only reveal previously classified intelligence on that successful mission. US National Security Council Counterterrorism Director Dr Sebastian Gorka described the intelligence haul as unprecedented since 9/11. He said recovered weapons, ammunition and electronic devices will help security agencies disrupt ISIS networks. The stronger security partnership followed the creation of a Nigeria-US Joint Working Group on Security after talks in Washington in November 2025.
