1 / 2

Suspected political thugs reportedly attacked journalists in Idembia, Ezza South LGA of Ebonyi State while they were travelling to cover an event organised by Chief Ifeanyi Nworie. The journalists were in a vehicle marked for the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists when the group allegedly tried to force its way into the vehicle and sought fuel to set it ablaze. The driver reportedly escaped with the journalists. The event was moved from a village square to the organiser’s compound after it was disrupted. However, the suspects allegedly barricaded the access road and attacked people heading to the venue. A passer-by was also reportedly beaten, while more than 20 armed police officers were seen at the original venue.

I agree, clearly marked press vehicles should not become targets. Journalists need reliable protection while covering political activities.

It is worrying that people reportedly travelling to report an event could face intimidation before they even arrive.

Police and relevant unions should document the incident promptly, support the affected journalists, and ensure safe access to future assignments.
