Ex-Kaduna Governor El-Rufai, Former Aide Arraigned Over N8.6bn CCTV Contract Fraud

Ex-Kaduna Governor El-Rufai, Former Aide Arraigned Over N8.6bn CCTV Contract Fraud

The ICPC has arraigned former Kaduna State governor Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, his ex-adviser Jimi Lawal and five others on an amended 11-count charge. They face allegations of corruption, money laundering and related offences over a N8.68bn CCTV surveillance contract in Kaduna metropolis. The Federal High Court in Kaduna heard that the contract was awarded to a firm without the required technical capacity. The commission claims more than N2bn in proceeds was transferred through multiple companies and individuals between 2017 and 2022 in suspected unlawful transactions. Both El-Rufai and Lawal pleaded not guilty when charges were read before Justice Hauwau Buhari. The court adjourned the matter to July 1, 2026, for ruling on bail applications. The former governor also faces separate proceedings by the DSS over alleged interception of communications.

This prosecution could lift public trust by showing no one is above the law here.

It seems odd that such a major contract would face so many alleged irregularities before any public oversight.

Focusing solely on El-Rufai might overlook wider procurement failures that affect every state, not just Kaduna.

Regular public audits and transparent bidding procedures should be mandated by all states to prevent N8.68bn contracts from being mismanaged.
