Retired Police Protest N1.5m Pension After 35 Years, Demand Separate Scheme
Retired officers in Ibadan have decried meagre retirement benefits, saying they receive barely N1.5 million after 35 years of service. Many now live on monthly pensions of just N70,000, which they say is insufficient for basic needs. They are calling on the President to sign a bill allowing the police to exit the Contributory Pension Scheme and establish a distinct system for serving and retired officers. Other security services already operate under separate pension arrangements. The protesters warned that poor post-retirement welfare could hurt morale among serving personnel and urged public support for reforms. Similar demonstrations have taken place in Abuja and other centres across the country. They say they will continue pressing their demands through lawful means until the government intervenes.
