Minna Court Jails Man 13 Years, Orders 20 Strokes for Rape of 10-Year-Old Girl

A Minna court has sentenced Aliyu Bala to 13 years in prison and 20 strokes of the cane for the rape of his neighbour’s 10-year-old daughter. The court also ordered him to pay ₦250,000 compensation to the child. Following the judgment, Bala was publicly caned at the Hakimi Palace in Bosso, Niger State. The Niger State Child Rights Agency said the enforcement demonstrates that sexual abuse against children will be treated seriously. Officials urged parents, traditional leaders and residents to report suspected child abuse and avoid shielding offenders. They said the child’s mother initially considered withdrawing the complaint but later allowed the case to proceed.
