Lagos Demolishes 349 Unsafe Structures, Uncovers Over 27,000 Building Infractions
The Lagos State Government has stepped up its drive against distressed and illegal buildings. Between May 2023 and April 2026, officials demolished 349 high-risk structures and identified 27,233 infractions to curb collapses and enforce safety rules. At a ministerial briefing in Ikeja, Olajide Babatunde, Special Adviser on E-GIS and Urban Development, said the Lagos State Building Control Agency led enforcement across five divisions. The agency issued 4,711 construction permits, conducted 8,099 stage inspections, and monitored 1,790 ongoing projects. It also issued 902 Certificates of Completion and Fitness for Habitation and verified 782 building insurance policies. In total, 19,320 enforcement actions—stop-work orders, seal-up notices, quit notices, and evacuation directives—were carried out against non-conforming structures. To boost public participation, the government launched whistle-blowing channels and social media tools. A new Certified Accreditors’ Programme and an Electronic Physical Planning Permit System now help stakeholders screen plans, track construction stages, and process approvals online.
