Anambra Assembly Urges Security IDs for Okada, Keke and Shuttle Buses

Anambra Assembly Urges Security IDs for Okada, Keke and Shuttle Buses

The Anambra State House of Assembly has passed a resolution calling on Governor Soludo to direct the transport commissioner to establish a security identification number system for all commercial transport operators in the state. This includes okada riders, keke drivers and shuttle bus services. The motion, sponsored by Hon Augustine Ikeh and 22 colleagues, highlighted that the absence of a registration mechanism has hampered tracking of vehicles linked to crimes such as robbery, kidnapping and theft. A central database of unique ID numbers would help security agencies trace operators and operational locations when incidents occur. Speakers including Hon Kingsley Udemezue, Hon Golden Iloh and Hon Mimi Azikiwe backed the proposal, stressing its potential to improve safety, accountability and regulation. The speaker of the house, Rt Hon Somtochukwu Udeze, added that ID numbers will make it easier to manage crime and identify offenders in Anambra.

Introducing unique security tags might slow down registration, but it could also reveal gaps in current transport monitoring practices across the state.

This extra ID bureaucracy could backfire by driving many okada and shuttle bus operators into informal, untracked services they prefer.

Transport officials should pair the ID scheme with affordable registration centers and periodic rider workshops to boost compliance and safety.
