Nigeria’s Headline Inflation Hits 15.69% in April 2026

Nigeria’s headline inflation climbed to 15.69% in April 2026, up from 15.38% in March, according to the National Bureau of Statistics. On a month-on-month basis, average prices rose by 2.13%, down from March’s 4.18% increase. Food inflation stood at 16.06% year-on-year, driven by rising costs of staples like millet, yam, garri and tomatoes, though this represents a slowdown from last year’s 24.68%. State-level data showed the highest inflation rates in Sokoto (25.74%), Bauchi (22.52%) and Zamfara (22.03%), while Edo, Borno and Jigawa recorded the slowest annual gains. On a monthly basis, Niger led with a 5.66% jump in prices, while Bayelsa, Enugu and Rivers saw marginal declines.

With inflation jumping to 15.69% and food inflation at 16.06%, how are households coping with these costs?

They call 2.13% slower growth a win, but at 15.69% headline and 16.06% food inflation, it hardly feels like relief.

Halving the month-on-month rate from 4.18% to 2.13% might sound good, but we're still stuck with double-digit inflation.

Budget adjustments matter: prioritise staples in season, buy in bulk when prices dip, and track monthly expenses closely amid high inflation.
