Ex-Minister Turaki Remanded to Kuje After Failing to Meet ₦100M Bail Terms

Ex-Minister Turaki Remanded to Kuje After Failing to Meet ₦100M Bail Terms

Senior lawyer and former minister Kabiru Tanimu Turaki was remanded to Kuje Correctional Facility after he could not perfect the ₦100 million bail granted by the Federal High Court in Abuja. Turaki faces a charge of providing false information to the Inspector-General of Police over an alleged petition he filed in October 2022. He pleaded not guilty and had a bench warrant vacated when he voluntarily appeared in court earlier this month. Justice Peter Kekemeke set bail at ₦100 million with one surety who must be a Senior Advocate of Nigeria or a senior legal practitioner. Turaki could not produce the required surety and documentation, so he remains in custody pending compliance. The trial is adjourned to June 11, 2026, for commencement of proceedings.

It's strange that a former minister can't even mobilize funds for a bail term he likely influenced while in office.

Not sure we should assume guilt just because he couldn't pay bail; many factors can affect bail perfection beyond innocence.

Lawyers should explore payment schedules or affidavits of surety to prevent pretrial detention on cash-heavy bails.
